The Wisdom of Sir Socks

Take a nap often.
Dream often.
Eat well.
Enjoy your food.
Strive to be well-loved.
Have plenty of companions.
Play sometimes, even after becoming an adult.
Love with your whole heart.
Speak up for yourself.
Don’t try to carry the whole burden—share with others.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help—we can’t do everything.
Enjoy life as much as possible.
Stretch a few times a day.
Wrestle or argue when tension is high between loved ones.
Cuddling and petting are forms of love—don’t forget to cuddle and pet me everyday.
Take good care of yourself and your loved ones.
Don’t abandon your loved ones—I hate to be lonely.
Find a good place to grow roots—I hate moving.
Make sure that kittens know their limits.
Discipline them when they forget.
Kittens are annoying.
Adolescents aren’t much better.
Adults are laid back and relaxed (usually).
Don’t work so hard.
Don’t stay away from home for too long—I miss you.
Many dogs are mean and cruel—don’t bring one home.
Austin is mean. You’re silly. I’m glad he doesn’t live here.
At least when you move me around in the big world, you put me in a carrier—I hate travelling in cars. Your trike isn’t much better for me.
Many humans have no respect for anyone—that’s why I avoid them as much as possible.
You’re a klutz, but I know you still love me. Please don’t step on me.
Jack said he’s blind. He wasn’t a klutz, yet you wear glasses too.
You say that you can’t see as well in the dark as well as I can. Thanks for the warning. I hate it when you walk into me. At least your hearing is good.
Please don’t ever play the flute again—it’s too scary for me to listen.
Your violin playing getting better—I hate listening to all your mistakes.
I enjoy your piano playing.

When Sir Socks Meets a Chihuahua

Sir Socks doesn’t
like dogs.
It might be okay
if they’re nice to him,
but he still wouldn’t
want to have much to do with them.
Still, there are those
Chihuahuas.
Those little dogs
who, when they bark,
jump backwards.
All bark and no bite.
If Sir Socks were to
met one,
I’m sure he’ll think
“You’re a dog?”
If the dog were
to annoy Sir Socks,
he would raise
his right forepaw
and smack the little dog.

The Next Day

I got up the next morning
and saw Socks
half sitting,
half standing
on the porch.
I opened the door
to let him in.
He said, “Meow, meow, meow, meow.”
I said, “Oh, did you come home last night
and I didn’t open the door for you?” I was asleep
and the window was closed.
I never heard him,
but he was quite upset with me.

Later that night,
I woke up feeling
two pressures on me.
One was against the top of my head—
it was the kitten
cuddling up to the hairiest
part of my body
as he would if he was
still with his biological mother.
The other pressure
was on my right arm.
I opened my eyes
and there was Socks
staring at me.
I went back to sleep.

Missing Socks

poem from Honoring the Cats in My Life

You are my first cat;
Nothing can change that fact.
I didn’t know much of cats
before you.
I gave you lots of love and attention—
like you wanted and asked.
I gave you good food
to keep you strong and healthy.
I gave you a little cat companion
to keep you company while I’m away.
I’m sorry if the kitten drove you crazy—
you were with him for a whole month.
I let you out because you wanted to go.

Now, I haven’t seen you and
I miss you terribly.
I wish you would come back home.
I miss your quietness.
I miss you watching me.
I miss you cuddling up to me,
lying on my stomach.
I miss your jumping on my furniture.
I miss you clawing my couch.
I miss you twitching your whiskers.
I miss you eating your food.
I miss watching you bath yourself.
I miss your yellow eyes, your mostly black hair.
Socki, I want to see you again.
I miss your meows.

I’m sure you can take care of yourself.
You were once an indoor/outdoor cat.
You could come and go as you pleased.
I wouldn’t mind setting that kind of arrangement
up for you.
I don’t know where you are, but
please come back to me.
The kitten misses you, too.
I’ll leave some catnip for you.

I hope you’re alright.
I hope you’re exploring the neighborhood.
I hope you’re enjoying your solitude—
You did need it after raising a kitten.
I hope you’re eating.
Please come home, Socki, I miss you.
My life is not the same without you.
When will you come back?
