Cat Quotes 5:02

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

“We have a theory that cats are planning to take over the world, just try to look them straight in the eye…yup, they’re hiding something!” — Dog Fancy

Of course many people think cats are planning to take over the world. It’s the attitude cats tend to have. Perhaps cats just do it by converting one human at a time. And of course cats are hiding something. They are too subtle for many to understand. Unlike dogs, cats don’t care to share how they feel all the time to everyone. Nor do they care to let us know what they are thinking.

“Civilization is defined by the presence of cats.” — Unknown

How can we be civilized if we don’t have cats somewhere around us? Even if we don’t live with cats or take care of them, we need someone to serve who isn’t ourselves. Otherwise we could end up becoming too self absorbed and selfish. We need others to keep us aware we aren’t the only ones in the world

Milk Isn’t Good for Cats

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

There’s a common myth that giving cats to milk is a good thing. When we are kittens, we need lots of milk from our mothers so we can grow up. It’s quite common to get it from our mothers, but sometimes that’s not a possibility and so we can get milk from other animals until we are old enough to wean off of it.

Another problem with milk is that what humans tend to drink is homogenized and pasteurized which make it harmful for us to consume. My girl never gave me milk to drink, but she did give some to Spot because he was so young. Then she had to wean him off because he could no longer digest it. At that point, he no longer needed it and could eat the same food as I was eating.

So, we cats may love the taste of milk, but it’s not good for us. Don’t give us any and stick to our regular diet so we can stay healthy.

Close to Nature

When I returned from a week in Baltimore visiting my daughter, my cat sitter said, with a look of disgust, “Your cat eats flies.”

I felt a surge of pride and reached down to scratch Pepper behind the ears. She figure-eighted around my ankles.

“There’s no accounting for taste,” I said.

I love living close to nature, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have boundaries. Every animal defends its territory, and I’m no exception. The space within these walls is mine.

The walls I’m talking about are the ones erected inside this barn I call home. The loft was converted to living space 50 years ago by hippies who were good with hammer and saw but not too concerned with sealing every nook and cranny. The exterior barn walls are porous – good for drying hay, but not for keeping out critters. The interior walls are insulated and relatively tight. But between the two are countless gaps and cavities accessible to nature. And below, the dry laid stone foundation and sliding doors of what used to be horse stalls admit all manner of rodent. Those same stone walls are also home to a large colony of garter snakes, who can be found warming themselves on the field stone patio by the front door on any given sunny summer day. That took some getting used to, but the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and no doubt they eat a lot of mice.

The mice they don’t eat sometimes find their way into the space I defend. It used to be worse. During the first year, I battled them with traps and poison with no apparent effect. I discovered why when I finally moved the old upright piano out of the kitchen. It was ridiculously heavy, so I disassembled it in an attempt to lighten it up. This proved futile – the weight was concentrated in the massive cast iron sound board – but in the process I discovered that the inside of the instrument was a virtual mouse hotel. It’s where they lived and where they (at least those I didn’t exterminate) died, judging by the number of desiccated carcasses under the keyboard.

Eliminating this refuge reduced the mouse population – or perhaps merely concentrated them between studs and joists. I’d been in denial about the stains on the kitchen ceiling, but one afternoon, in a fit of madness, I tore it down. Hours later, standing knee deep in mouse shit and piss-stained sheetrock, I eyed the kitchen walls, crowbar in hand. Fortunately, reason asserted itself and I realized I was approaching a point of diminishing returns.

That’s when I got Pepper.

I haven’t seen a mouse or evidence of mice since. Maybe they’re all gone. Maybe natural selection has favored those that carry a boundary awareness gene, and they are content to stay on their side of the wallboard. So who can blame Pepper, her favorite prey exhausted, having to find what pleasure she can in flies and spiders and such.

When the cat sitter left. I emptied a can of Friskies salmon pate into a bowl.

“Good girl,” I said, setting it down.

Milk

Often thought of as a treat to give to cats. It’s a common story about farmers who milk cows would tend to give the barn cats the fresh milk. The cats loved it and also took care of the rodents that plagued the farmers.

Spot’s Adventures

Spot was quite a curious cat. My girl brought him home when he was a little kitten. He was so curious that after he grew up, he would sometimes sneak out and have adventures all by himself. My girl noticed when he was gone. Sometimes she would panic and ask for help looking for him. One time, she knew he was gone and didn’t know what to do. He came back later that night and she let him in.

I used to roam the neighborhoods I lived in and I understand why he did it too. But I never knew that a human caregiver could worry when one of us would go off on any adventure. We are lucky my girl knows about the dangers we face when we go outside and roam. It could be mean dogs or mean humans.

At least Spot came home and stayed home for a while. I suppose that’s why my girl did take him out on a leash a few times. I supposed it helped satiate his curiosity, but I didn’t like it. I don’t see why he needed to go outside when we had it so good inside where it was safe too.

Cat Quotes 5:01

“The cat has too much spirit to have no heart.” — Ernest Menault

After living with cats for more than a decade, I know they have spirit and heart both. They talk to me. They play with me. Sometimes they complain and sometimes they just let me know they love me.

“The problem with cats is that they get the same exact look whether they see a moth or an axe murderer.” — Paula Poundstone

It is true that many people don’t think cats have many looks. Their faces aren’t as expressive as humans, but for those of us who have lived with cats for a very long time, we know cats are very subtle. So, to someone who hasn’t watched cats very closely, their facial expressions look the same no matter what the cat is looking at. But someone who knows the subtle signs will have a much better idea of what a cat thinks and feels.

Dental Care

Like humans, cats can get gum disease and cavities. It’s not pretty. Although, I think as a cat, it can be hard to get proper dental care. I didn’t like my girl trying to brush my teeth. I know I wouldn’t have like to get a dental cleaning and exam because I never liked going to the vet. However, we cats need some kind of dental care or we can get cavities and lose our teeth. Also all the bad bacteria that accumulates inside our mouths causing bad breath can lead to other diseases.

Perhaps we just need a little wet food to get us to brush our own teeth with our tongues. Or try to brush our teeth. Or even feed us special treats which can help reduce plaque and tarter build up.

Dental Care

Dental care for cats means a nuance. It means their caregivers have to use toothbrushes and brush their teeth. Not that it tends to work. It is recommended to take them to the vet where the cat is knock unconscious otherwise, no one would be able to clean their teeth. I have found it’s just easier to let them have some wet food and then they will clean their teeth better with their own tongues.
