Cat Quotes 2:06

There’s no need for a piece of sculpture in a home that has a cat. —Wesley Bates

Cats are real and living pieces of art. They have so much grace. They are quite athletic. All the jumping they can do. The climbing. The loafing. All with such grace as to make us believe they have some secrets we haven’t mastered yet.

The trouble with cats is that they’ve got no tact. —P. G. Wodehouse

Cats are bold. They will tell you what they think of you without caring how you will react to it. They don’t sugar coat the truth. They just tell you plain and simple. They don’t need to tact to tell us anything.

Furever Home

graphic from Ali Noel Vyain

This month’s cat vocabulary is a term from Twitter known as furever home which means the home that cat gets for the rest of their life after living in a shelter.

Some cats don’t even make it to a shelter. Sometimes they find themselves homeless and not liking living on the streets. So, they wander around the neighborhood looking for their furever home. Some tend to find one by recognizing the signs of crazy cat people. Not that the humans always know it. Sometimes they find a way inside the house and settle in and wait for the human to show.

Much like the ones who are in shelters waiting for someone to come and adopt them. It’s hard to say how long they wait. It seems easier when they are kittens. When they become seniors, their odds of getting adopted decrease significantly. But seniors cats need homes too. They probably need something quiet and relaxing as their lives wind down. It just all depends upon the cat.

So, if you want or need a cat, please go to your local shelter first. Chances are good that you will find at least one good companion who needs love as much as you do.

Cat Quotes 2:05

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Cats always know whether people like or dislike them. They do not always care enough to do anything about it. —Winifred Carriere

Cats are highly intelligent. Yet, they are rather apathetic at the same time. They are sensitive and do know who’s a crazy cat person and who isn’t. They know when they are instantly liked and loved and when they are not. They also know when your opinion of them changes. But that doesn’t mean they care about what you think about them.

If a cat does something, we call it instinct; if we do the same thing, for the same reason, we call it intelligence. —Will Cuppy

Cats are animals and so are humans. I know there are plenty who would insist humans aren’t animals, but they are the ones who are blind. They are denying our biology. We haven’t even proved we are better than any animal on this planet. Just because we can’t understand why non-human animals behave or think doesn’t make them less intelligent than ourselves. It just means we don’t know everything.

Shelter in Other Languages

graphic from Ali Noel Vyain

This month’s cat vocabulary is the word shelter. Not always a good word to a cat who’s homeless and in need of love and healthcare, but things could be much worse for the cat if they are left outside to die.

Many cats aren’t happy to be caught and taken to a shelter, but some adjust to their new environment fairly quickly. It doesn’t take them long to learn that they will be cared for and they can interact with other cats.

Another plus is that they can be adopted and taken home to live with someone who will adore them for the rest of their lives. So, they make the best of it and wait.

I think shelters can be the best way to find a cat companion that I cannot live without for long. So, even if my current beloved cat has died, you may find me at the shelter fairly soon to find another cat.

Cat Quotes 2:04

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Cats are the ultimate narcissists. You can tell this by all the time they spend on personal grooming. Dogs aren’t like this. A dog’s idea of personal grooming is to roll in a dead fish. —James Gorman

So, grooming is more important to cats than dogs. You don’t usually have to worry about bathing a cat. They take care of that themselves. But dogs, you have to bathe them or else they just won’t stay clean.

If we treated everyone we meet with the same affection we bestow upon our favorite cat, they, too, would purr. —Martin Buxbaum

Of course I spoil any cat I live with. It’s my job as a crazy cat lady or a gattara. I enjoy every minute of it. It just makes the cats so happy…

A Magical Tale

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Cheryl, who had a big flower garden that she tended every day. She had worked hard to collect and plant all the flowers. The whole process took years to complete with petunias, marigolds, impatiens, daffodils, tiger lilies, day lilies, jonquils, and tulips. Unfortunately, she didn’t have any roses. She wanted roses. She went out and looked everyday, but couldn’t find the right ones for her garden.

One day Cheryl was in the store searching in vain for roses. She sighed when she found all the ones the store had to offer. “Oh, these just won’t do! Why can’t I find the right roses for my garden?”

Dejected once again, she left the store and started walking through the little neighborhood back to her house and garden. She was distracted as she was busy thinking too hard about the roses she couldn’t find for her garden. She didn’t have any warning. Nor did the young man she walked right into. They almost fell over each other on the sidewalk.

“Ouch!” They both said at the same time.

“Oh, I’m so sorry. I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going. Are you alright?” asked Cheryl.

“Oh, I think so, but I couldn’t see you until it was too late.”

“But you’re wearing glasses.”

“They don’t help that much. I’m legally blind.”

“Oh. Well, I’m even more sorry that I wasn’t looking.”

“Why weren’t you paying attention to where you were going?”

“Oh, I was just thinking about the roses that I can’t find for my garden. I’ve been looking a long time, but I haven’t found the ones my garden needs at the store.”

“You have a garden without roses? Is it a very big garden?”

“Yes, it’s quite big, but it’s beautiful.” She paused as she thought had for a moment. “You seem familiar to me. Haven’t we met before?”

“Well, that’s possible. I do walk around here quite often. I’m Jack, and you are?”

“Cheryl.”

“Nice to meet you, Cheryl. Would it be possible for me to see your garden someday?”

“Sure. I’m usually there tending it.”

*****

Later that same day, Cheryl was busying tending her garden once again. She was so absorbed that she didn’t notice when Jack came strolling down the garden path. He didn’t say anything for awhile as he watched her tend to her flowers. Finally, she stood up and turned around.

“Oh, my goodness! I didn’t know you were there. How long have you been standing there?”

“Oh, not long at all.” He paused to make sure she was alright. “I decided since I didn’t have anything to do today, that I would come by to see your beautiful garden.”

“Oh, okay. So what do you think of it?”

“It’s large and very beautiful, just like the gardener herself.”

Smiling she said, “Thank you. I’m glad you like it. Would you like something to drink? I was just about to get a lemonade for myself.”

“Sure, lemonade sounds good to me.”

Cheryl then turned to the house and went inside. Jack watched her and when she wasn’t looking, he pulled out his wand. He held it up and pointed in the garden where no flowers grew. He waved it a couple of times as he silently said a few words. Then he put the wand back inside his coat out of sight. By that time, Cheryl had returned with a couple of glasses of lemonade.

“We can drink our lemonade over here at the table.”

Jack followed her and sat down opposite of her.

While they chatted about what wasn’t so important, roses began to bloom in the garden where no flowers had ever grown before. Jack knew it was happening even though he couldn’t see them well. Cheryl was too busy drinking lemonade and talking with her guest to notice the newcomers.

Just before sunset, Jack told Cheryl he had to go home. She thanked him for a pleasant afternoon and then he walked out the way he came in. After he was gone some minutes, she looked over her garden and gasped when she saw the roses.

“Those are the exact roses I have been looking for a very long time! I wonder how they got here.” Baffled, she picked up the empty glasses and took them inside the house.

*****

At home, Jack was busy dictating to his quill about his daily adventures. He was thankful he didn’t have to write with the quill and that it wrote whatever he said. It was good to be a wizard, he thought. The only problem with the dictating quill was the cats. His two cats, Lilly and Spitter liked to swat at the quill when it was moving. So, Jack added a spell that would allow the quill to defend itself. That spell only made matters worse as the quill would swat back and the cats loved it even more. It was truly amazing how much writing Jack was able to do everyday.

He hoped Cheryl liked her present of roses in her garden. He knew he would have to tell her, a muggle, the truth sooner or later. He wasn’t sure what he would say to her, but he knew he would have to tell her. In the meantime, he thought it wouldn’t be a problem to keep visiting her in her garden and making sure all her flowers were healthy. So, that’s what he kept doing.

*****

Months passed by and Cheryl and Jack became the best of friends. The garden prospered under their friendship. All the flowers were healthy and beautiful. They seemed to never fade. Then one day as Jack was casting another spell on the garden, thinking he wasn’t seen as usual, but Cheryl has stepped back outside sooner than he had expected.

“Hey, Jack, what kind of sandwich did you want?” She walked over to him and saw him pointing his wand directly at the garden. Her eyes widen and she said, “What are you doing to my garden?”

Jack froze in place. He lowered his wand and then turned to face her. “Well, I thought you’d appreciate it. All the flowers that is.”

Cheryl just stared at him for a long time. “Did you plant those roses?”

“Yes, with my wand.”

“Oh, thank you, but I had no idea you were a wizard.”

“Well, yes, but I knew I would have to tell you sooner or later.” He paused. “You’re not mad, are you?”

“No, actually I’m shocked, but I love how beautiful my garden has been since you’ve been here.”

“I’m glad you like it. You have done a lot of work on it.”

*****

Later that evening, Jack talked to his cats about what had happened with Cheryl that day. They stopped playing with the quill and listened intently.
“Now, I’m afraid once she gets over her shock that she won’t want to see me anymore. What am I to do?”
Both cats wagged their tails and walked over to him and touched his face with a forepaw. Then they jumped down from the table and ran off. Jack heard them go and knew that they would be back before long.

*****

Cheryl was sitting in her garden, staring at the roses. She wasn’t so sure about Jack now that she knew he was a wizard. She had heard too many bad things about them and she hoped he wasn’t like that. As she sat musing, two housecats ran up her garden path. Without any warning they jumped on the table and starting meowing at her.

“What? Where did you come from?”

Both cats wouldn’t stop talking for several minutes. Then they got quiet. Lily jumped off the table and ran over to the roses. Spitter remained and lifted a forepaw to point to her sister.

That was when comprehension dawned on Cheryl. These two cats obviously lived with Jack and they were trying to tell her he gave her the very flowers she wanted because he loved her. “Hey, cats, where is Jack now?”

Both cats came together on the garden path and pointed their forepaws in the direction they needed to go. Cheryl stood up and followed the two all the way to Jack’s place.

Once there, she found him sighing.

“Oh, why did I have to get careless with the flower spells? If I hadn’t, Cheryl would still be happy with me and her garden…” He sighed again.

“Jack, it’s okay. I was just shocked. After what I’ve heard about some wizards, it made me pause. But then I thought about it and you haven’t done anything wrong. You’re not like those bad wizards. You even gave me the roses I’ve been wanting and searching for a long time.”

Jack turned around. “I’m so glad you’re not upset with me.”

“Would you like to come back and visit my garden again?”

“Yes, of course!”

The four of them, Cheryl, Jack, Lily, and Spitter, walked back to the flower garden. There they spent many happy times with a few occasional spell blow-ups.

Vaccine in Other Languages

graphic from Ali Noel Vyain

This month’s cat vocabulary is the word vaccine. I don’t know of anyone who likes to get shots for anything, but sometimes we do need them. As long as we don’t have any adverse reactions to the vaccine, they should help us stay healthy and prevent serious health problems from occurring.

For cats, that means a rabies vaccine and perhaps a few others. It is a good idea to make sure they have their vaccine so they don’t go crazy and bite random humans for no real reason.

I’m just happy that when they get their shots, it doesn’t take very long and they do get over it fairly quickly. It seems to help when whoever gave them the shot distracts them with some playful way.

Cat Quotes 2:03

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a purpose. —Garrison Keillor

Cats don’t have a purpose? What about putting us in our place? What about teaching us we aren’t the only intelligent species on this planet? What about teaching us how to treat them with respect to earn their respect in return?

A meow massages the heart. —Stuart McMillan

Yes, it does. It’s wonderful to hear a pleasant meow. A greeting or Nuri’s happy sound. The sound she makes when she is happy to see me and will let me pick her up and cuddle her as she purrs.

Vet in Other Languages

graphic from Ali Noel Vyain

This month’s cat vocabulary is the word vet. Not someone cats always like, but have to deal with at times. I don’t blame cats for not liking the vet. I don’t care to see doctors that much either.

But sometimes it is necessary. Check ups can be helpful especially if a cat doesn’t complain when something goes wrong inside of their bodies. Cats are famous for hiding their various ailments and illnesses so that other predators don’t know.

It’s a survival instinct. I can’t say I blame them. It’s not always good to complain about every little thing. It will just make us all sicker and more miserable.

Depending upon what it is, we and cats can get better with or without medical intervention. We just have to make sure we can take care of ourselves and know when it’s time to ask for help.

Milow, the Kitten with a Magic Tail

(I wrote this little story at the request of Milow, a kitten I met on Twitter. @Milowmagic Also, it’s International Cat Day, so I’ll go ahead and wish it to be a wonderful day for cats everywhere. By the way, I did spoil and love my little darling, Nuri. She’s quite happy now.)

Once upon a time, there was a kitten named Milow. He was a cute little thing his human mama had found in a shelter. Soon it was obvious he had a magic tail. The tip was white in sharp contrast to the rest of his silvery fur. He could wave it and the magic would come sparkling out.

The better half of the courage was when he was growing up and exploring. He would get into drawers because he was still so small. Once inside he discovered many things. He discovered there was an elf named Silver Moon Unicorn.

This particular elf had a tendency to create feathers from thin air to defuse any tensions with other people. The elf had learned that the best way to defeat people who are poor listeners was with laughter. She waved her wand and poof! Feathers would appear and tickle the poor unsuspecting people.

But it had to be the joyful, playful sort of laughter or else it wouldn’t work. It was the same kind of laughter that Milow could create with his presence and by waving his magic tail.

One evening Milow was looking out the window of his flat. He saw some figures doing a waltz. They were transparent like ice. After the ice waltz the kitten saw outside his window, he heard some humans talking to each other.

“Let’s listen to the sky.”

“Yes, let’s do.”

Everyone watched the stars and the moon appear.

And the real night comes, thought Milow to himself. He wondered if he would meet Silver Moon Unicorn. He remembered she did say she could fly by using her magic wand.

He wagged his tail three times and an elf appeared flying on a broomstick in front of the moon. She came near his window. She waved and said hi.

Milow mewed back. Then he saw someone else was holding onto the broom and flying with her. Someone small with black cat ears, black cat tail, and two black cat paws. The little one also had blond hair and blue eyes.

He laughed. “Hi, Milow! I’m a little neko. That means I’m half human and half cat. Meow!” He laughed some more. “My name is White Lion Unicorn and I’m flying with mama so I can talk to you as cats do!”

They meowed for several minutes. Silver Moon smiled to hear them. Not that she could understand them, but that didn’t matter. Milow did a couple of back flips and smiled.
