Limber

Cats are limber. It’s a true fact about us and something I know my girl likes to watch. We lack a true collarbone which humans have. This makes us much more flexible. It gives us the ability to right ourselves when we’re falling to land on our paws. This lack of collarbone gives us the ability to squeeze through tight places. We just have to judge if it’s possible with the size of our heads.

Blood Groups

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Like humans, cats have blood groups such as A or B or even AB. Blood group A is the most common. A cat’s blood group is determined by genes. As a cat, I don’t know why this would be important, but my girl tells me it could be important if the cat needs a blood transfusion and then the blood group will determine if the donor blood can be accepted.

I never knew what my blood group is. It was probably A, but that doesn’t matter now. I don’t need blood where I’m at. I doubt most cats would care what their blood groups are. It’s just not something we think about or even consider.

Teaching Cats

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Many humans think cats can’t be taught to do anything as dogs can. Well, it’s not entirely true. We can be taught anything if we want to learn. Let me stress that again. Cats can be taught anything if we want to learn them. Otherwise, you’re just being a silly human.

Some cats like to get attention from doing acrobatics and so they learn to jump through hoops, walk on balance beams and the like. We can even learn to play a piano. Or to eat with utensils. Or use a toilet inside of a litter box.

Well, my girl tried to teach me to use the toilet and I refused. I’m sticking with the box. Perhaps Spot could have learned to use a toilet, but I was unwilling and then my girl gave up. I’m glad she figured it out that I wasn’t interested and didn’t want to learn. I’d worry if she didn’t get that message.

Litter Box Training

Do we really need litter box training? Well, perhaps we do. Our mothers can teach us and we can learn by watching them bury their wastes in a litter box. It wasn’t hard for me to learn or even to do after I hadn’t had one in years. My girl just picked me up and set me inside the box of litter. I didn’t have to go at the time, but I understood what it was and what she wanted me to do with it.

When Spot came along, I had to teach them how to use a litter box. I know he watched me and imitated everything I did. That’s fine. He just had to learn how to bury his wastes and he did. I was a good example for him.

Why Cats Bury Their Wastes

We bury our wastes to be clean of course. That was quite obvious to many humans. But we do it for other reasons too. One is to hide from predators. In the wild, we may not want attention to hide ourselves or to hide kittens. Another reason is to show we are submissive to the dominant cat. In the case of a home, the dominant cat may be the human looking after us.

If we don’t bury our wastes, it may be because we are marking our turf and we consider ourselves dominant. Or we may be sick. Sick cats with digestive issues may not bury their waste. It’s a way for us to tell you we are sick and we want help. Showing you our wastes is a way for you to see that something isn’t right.

We may also refuse to use the litter box because we are angry. Poop gets noticed and hopefully, our humans understand why are are angry.

Hunting Instincts

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Once we cats went to live with humans and the humans gave us plenty of food to eat, we no longer had to hunt to survive. Unfortunately that can cause some problems. It’s good when we kill mice as we can save humans from any diseases the mice may have. It’s not good when we kill local wildlife such as birds, especially if we don’t eat them.

This is also why it is illegal in many places to let us roam freely. However, there are options if we go out so we don’t cause problems. One is to give us an enclosed area known as a catio. These are wonderful and safe places for us to go outside. Another options is to leash us and take us out for walks. Play with us and let us catch the toys every so often. That way we can have the thrill of catching prey.

Perhaps we don’t need hunting instincts as housecats, but there are ways of dealing with them safely. We can be happy and pretend without the dangers of roaming freely outside.

Cats’ Homing Ability

It is amazing how far we can travel especially when we know where our home is. When our humans move us, we may still try to get back to home because we haven’t learned the new place is our home. Some cats are reputed to travel long distances to return home.

However, there is a way to keep us cats from getting lost and roaming off. When you move with us, you must keep us indoors for at least a week so we can learn our new home. A treat, such as tuna, is a good way to help us get over the trauma of moving. Some humans have rubbed butter onto our paws to help us remember our new home.

I would highly recommend some sort of treat and keeping us inside. Otherwise, we won’t agree with you as to where home is.

Killing Cats

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

In some places, it is illegal to kill cats. We cats like the protection. In ancient Egypt, killing a cat was punishable by death. They knew cats were the reason they didn’t have to worry about disease carrying rodents. We cats killed the rodents and saved the humans.

I do know where we are honored to the fullest, it is illegal to kill us. However, in many places, it’s legal to put us to sleep, which is killing cats. Some do it because they can’t take care of all the cats due to lack of funds and policies which aren’t good for us. One reason they do kill cats is because we are too sick to live. Usually it’s the humans who decide which cats get treatment and which will die because treatment isn’t worth it.

How Cats Purr

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

There is a theory about how cats purr. Perhaps the human scientists are right. They seem to think we have extra tissue in our voice boxes which vibrates. My girl has tried to imitate a purr, but it’s not that great because she doesn’t have the right voice box.

Scientists do know we purr at the same frequency as human babies. Perhaps that is why we can comfort humans with a purr they can’t ignore.

Cat Aggression

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Cat aggression isn’t very simple. It’s easier to understand with tom cats who fight for territory and mates. But it still exists in cats who are fixed. It can be caused by personality clashes or even not being able to get at the one the aggression is directed towards. It could be the cat is inside and there is another human or animal they can’t get to and so they take it out on someone else.

This is not the same as when cats play wrestle. With aggression there is hissing which can lead to growling and fighting. Sometimes this sort of fighting isn’t tolerated well by humans. I remember my girl yelled at both Spot and me for fighting and she told us we had to work it out and get along. She then put us in the shower together. We were stunned, but then we got used to each other and stopped fighting.

We realized she was right and we didn’t realize before she blew up how our fighting was upsetting her. There is no reason to fight like that when she loves us both equally and unconditionally. So, we learned to get along and just wrestled to get the tension out. No longer getting into full aggressive fights. Things were better for all of us after that.
