There is no more intrepid explorer than a kitten. —Jules Champfleury
Kittens don’t think about the consequences. They just want an adventure and they do find it without trying very hard. They explore and learn all sorts of things. They are more observant than many humans I’ve known in my life.
If a cat did not put a firm paw down now and then, how could his human remain possessed? —Winifred Carriere
I love how humans think they can give cats rules to follow when in reality, it’s the other way around. The cats are laying down the rules and enforcing them in ways that most humans aren’t aware of. Cats can be adorable and purr. Two ways in which they enforce their possession of humans.
It has been several moons since our dear readers have received a missive from his royal highness Julius. Seasons are once again changing at Casa Julius, and his Highness has completed his transition from his winter to summer quarters yet again — an arduous annual journey from his blanketed chair by the living room fireplace to his blanketed window basket in the summer sun.
So far, this summer has been a quiet one at Casa Julius. There have been no sightings of coyotes in the nearby woods, and the turf wars of last summer with the neighboring cat-kings has yet to resurface. Perhaps that is the influence of Dog, his Highness’ live-in court jester and man-at-arms. What there have been are plenty of birds, and snakes, and frogs, and little insects that scurry around in the garden outside. His Highness has taken to watching their motions throughout the day as his royal entertainment. It is great fun for him to watch inferior creatures travailing in the summer weeds, while he is content and comfortable inside his air-conditioned palace.
Sometimes the sorry little creatures find their way into the house, and his Highness will dispose of these intruders himself, personally. Hunting them is like sport for him — the more dangerous ones, of course, are handled by his soldiers without him even having to lift a paw. But the insects that present no real danger, only fun, definitely are the sport of the emperor. He has taken a great liking to hunting them in the evenings. There is nothing better than engaging in a riveting indoor hunt followed up by a tongue-bath and a little sip of milk. It is not becoming, of course, for an emperor to eat what he has hunted. (Such is the habit of the peasantry.) But his man-at-arms is happy to accept whatever his Highness presents. Another benefit of having a dog in the house — Julius now has a live-in vacuum cleaner as well.
From his summer basket, His Highness sends his regards. He hopes that his followers are having a pleasant opening to summer just as he is.
April showers have definitely brought May flowers to casa Julius this year, dearest readers — a world that was swept with winter and bitter cold just weeks ago has suddenly begun to transform into a realm of green.
Every spring season, the emperor dutifully supervises from the top of his seven foot cat tree as his imperial gardener works her magic in the soil and transforms his winter view into a luxurious summer one. Soon, Julius’ sights will be full of beautiful displays of blooming trees, budding flowers, and singing birds. (The birds are probably the most important feature.)
Being an indoor emperor, Julius himself does not get his paws dirty with gardening. However, at casa Julius we do have admiration for the intrepid cats who take matters into their own paws and get to work shaping their gardens into personal havens complete with endless napping spots, plenty of hunting opportunities, countless snacks, and, perhaps best of all, unlimited litterbox access!
This month, readers, we hope you enjoy our list of our favorite YouTube cats in the garden!
#5. Gardening around a cat…
If you ask me, it sounds from the title that this human isn’t appreciative of the important assistance their feline sage is trying to offer. It’s vital that everything is checked and approved by the cat before it goes into the ground. There is so much to do — testing soil quality, eating weeds, and more. Silly human!
#4. Cookie Cat and Honey Cat
These two are taking matters into their own paws — the best kind of landscapers and gardeners that you could possibly hire. You won’t have to worry about weeds or too-tall grass anymore with these two around.
#3. Energetic Cat Helps Out with Gardening
No, human, you must have my assistance! Faster than lightning, this cat immediately knows where he’s needed. Sensing his human’s incompetence, he wisely decides to rush in and save the day by offering his gardening guidance and expertise. This will probably be the best garden of the year!
#2. Cat’s Day in the Garden
To call this a mini movie doesn’t honestly do the video justice. With beautifully edited footage, gorgeous scenery, and adorable actors to boot, this movie will offer great inspiration when it comes to designing and creating a perfect garden for your feline royalty. Endless opportunities for rewatching, both for relaxation and inspiration. And this channel offers even more gorgeous cat/garden goodness if you want to see more.
#1. Oscar the Garden Cat
Finishing off our list is none other than the courageous, all-knowing, all-doing Oscar the Garden Cat. Oscar is a bonafide gardening expert — if your cat would like a blueprint for how to become the best garden helper there is, Oscar is definitely a must-watch. I have no doubts that any plant he touches grows wonderfully, blessed by wise Oscar’s whiskers! And if you couldn’t get enough of Oscar the first time, don’t worry. There’s a part two!

Beware when a cat hisses at you. It’s a warning. We may not like you. We may not like the way you’re treating us. Or perhaps we just don’t feel well. Cats like humans can get irritable. We get sick on occasion. Hopefully, not very often. When our favorite people die or never come back to visit us or be with us, we get depressed. We can get upset when new people come into our lives.
But a hiss is just a warning. It means we want you to give us some space. Just leave us alone for a bit. Perhaps we just need to watch you from afar before we can let you get closer to us. Don’t take it personally and just give us the space we’re asking for.
I wish it wasn’t true. I know it’s true though. Sometimes even cats get overlooked because we’re shy. In my case, I can be fast and I know how to hide. But in my girl’s case, people just like to overlook her because she’s not outgoing enough for them. I don’t understand that attitude.
Being shy shouldn’t cause this reaction. I know we don’t always want to be around others, but does that mean we ask to be overlooked? No, it doesn’t. I know I’m quiet. I still have things to say and write about. I have much to contribute when given a chance with people I feel comfortable with.
Being shy doesn’t mean we don’t know anything and aren’t capable. If anything it’s the quiet ones who know more and are more capable than the ones who just boast. We don’t feel the need to boast about what we know and can do. We just do and go on with our lives quietly.
So, the next time you feel inclined to overlook someone shy, stop and realize they may not feel comfortable sharing with you because they don’t know you very well. It will take time for us to open up. It can’t be done with the snap of your fingers. But we are worth the time and trouble as my girl can say about me.
Way down deep, we’re all motivated by the same urges. Cats have the courage to live by them. —Jim Davis
Cats just don’t care what anyone thinks of them. They are that independent. Humans may worry about what others think and tend to hide parts of themselves to appear more socially acceptable. I’m not sure it’s good to deny parts of ourselves. I think it’s better to accept our whole beings — good and bad equally. Denial only makes things worse than they need to be. I think the cats are right to be themselves completely and fully. If we could do that, perhaps we would be happier and less likely to hurt others.
I believe cats to be spirits come to earth. A cat, I am sure, could walk on a cloud without coming through. —Jules Verne
Cats are certainly something special and mystical. They seem magical when they defy gravity as Bug Bunny can. They don’t act as if magic is something unreal, but something very real indeed. There is certainly magic in their purr.
Can be quite annoying until they grow up. Can be too playful. I had to raise one and he adored me from the start. I couldn’t stand him at first. He wanted to play all the time. Yet, I know I was a kitten once. I did play then too. But I don’t think I was ever as bad as Spot was. I’m just not silly enough to have been like that.
Kittens have so much to learn. I know I learned a lot as a kitten. I also taught Spot how to be a good cat. He learned from me and he also picked up some weird behaviors from my girl too. If it weren’t for me, there’s not telling how different Spot would have turned out.
I do know kittens are necessary or else cats would disappear. So, fine have a few kittens, but don’t bother me with them.
My girl likes to doodle or actually draw at times. One thing she can draw is cats. So, she drew some cats and eventually came up with a little comic with just one episode so far known as Game of Cats. It features Princess Tiger Lily versus Lady Nuria. It’s just line drawings, but it gets the point across. Those who have seen this as a movie find it funny.
I’m not surprised people find it funny. My girl can be silly and she adores us cats quite a bit. So, it’s a good thing for her to do when she doesn’t have anything else going on. I hope she does some more episodes. Perhaps her drawing will improve and she’ll have an interesting little comic for all of us to read and see.
I wonder if I could get her to draw more pictures of me? Perhaps I could star in one of her comics…
A kitten is simply a baby cat or child cat. They are young and immature. They do grow up in about 1-2 years. They can be silly and want to play all the time. They may deny they are tired when they are quite exhausted. They can be quite cute and learn how to get what they want.
