Shelter in Other Languages

graphic from Ali Noel Vyain

This month’s cat vocabulary is the word shelter. Not always a good word to a cat who’s homeless and in need of love and healthcare, but things could be much worse for the cat if they are left outside to die.

Many cats aren’t happy to be caught and taken to a shelter, but some adjust to their new environment fairly quickly. It doesn’t take them long to learn that they will be cared for and they can interact with other cats.

Another plus is that they can be adopted and taken home to live with someone who will adore them for the rest of their lives. So, they make the best of it and wait.

I think shelters can be the best way to find a cat companion that I cannot live without for long. So, even if my current beloved cat has died, you may find me at the shelter fairly soon to find another cat.

Cat Quotes 2:04

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Cats are the ultimate narcissists. You can tell this by all the time they spend on personal grooming. Dogs aren’t like this. A dog’s idea of personal grooming is to roll in a dead fish. —James Gorman

So, grooming is more important to cats than dogs. You don’t usually have to worry about bathing a cat. They take care of that themselves. But dogs, you have to bathe them or else they just won’t stay clean.

If we treated everyone we meet with the same affection we bestow upon our favorite cat, they, too, would purr. —Martin Buxbaum

Of course I spoil any cat I live with. It’s my job as a crazy cat lady or a gattara. I enjoy every minute of it. It just makes the cats so happy…

Playtime

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

My girl is right. We all need some playtime. I was never that fond of toys or playing a lot. But she is right. We do need some playtime. We all need to rest and relax from the stress in our lives.

Perhaps we experience a different form of stress than you humans do. But we need to play too. I like to wrestle other cats. I know my girl will play with me. *Sigh.* I don’t always like it, but I know she won’t take it too far. She just wants to play for a little bit. Then she stops before I ever lose it. She even plays with Spot as if she is a cat! The two of them have a lot fun doing that. I think they’re both nuts and silly.

But they are right. We do need some playtime. Otherwise life can become too much for us to handle on our own.

A Message From Sir Socks Concerning COVID-19

Sir Socks as himself

You humans have discovered a new virus that is highly contagious, spreads quickly, and practically none of you have immunity to it. Your scientists are working on a vaccine, but it’s not available now to prevent this crisis.

Some of you humans are on lockdown. I hope you have cats (and you’re not allergic) or even a dog. We can and will keep you from being too lonely. Cats tend to purr and we help you when you’re sick. We will look after you.

If you’re extroverted, a lockdown will be hard on you. You won’t be able to go out unless you have to work or get food or medication. If you don’t live with others, then you can try going into virtual reality. No need to be socially isolated from others in this time of the pandemic.

If you’re introverted, please enjoy your solitude. You probably won’t need to worry about getting any hangovers from over socializing. Don’t forget to talk to your friends and relatives to keep them from getting lonely or feeling forgotten.

Oh, and don’t forget to take care of yourselves and us if you have us to look after. We can’t get this virus from you or give it to you. So, you don’t need to worry about that. Just stay calm and enjoy what time you have.

One more thing to my fellow cats: we need to take care of our devoted human servants or else we could end up back in the Cat Dark Ages. Let’s not go there. Let’s work together for everyone’s survival. We need each other in times like these.

Focus On The Good Things, Mommy

Focus on the good things, Mommy,

focus on me, when you’re tired and

never want to leave this bed again,

crying about things I don’t understand,

heavy human words that fly over my head

Focus on the good things, Mommy,

focus on me, the little warm

bundle in your lap, on your heart

purring remedies into your bones

listening with poised ears to your breaths

coming longer, quieter, calmer,

as we settle down into snuggles

Focus on the good things, Mommy,

focus on me, my little face gazing up at you,

radiant, whisker-framed,

my paws and pink toe beans,

my tail tucked in so perfectly

Focus on the good things, Mommy,

focus on me–

the little soul that follows

you every night, every step

to snuggle close and purr

until you smile again

Focus on the good things, Mommy,

focus on me, and sleep well,

knowing that I am here

and I love you

A Magical Tale

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Cheryl, who had a big flower garden that she tended every day. She had worked hard to collect and plant all the flowers. The whole process took years to complete with petunias, marigolds, impatiens, daffodils, tiger lilies, day lilies, jonquils, and tulips. Unfortunately, she didn’t have any roses. She wanted roses. She went out and looked everyday, but couldn’t find the right ones for her garden.

One day Cheryl was in the store searching in vain for roses. She sighed when she found all the ones the store had to offer. “Oh, these just won’t do! Why can’t I find the right roses for my garden?”

Dejected once again, she left the store and started walking through the little neighborhood back to her house and garden. She was distracted as she was busy thinking too hard about the roses she couldn’t find for her garden. She didn’t have any warning. Nor did the young man she walked right into. They almost fell over each other on the sidewalk.

“Ouch!” They both said at the same time.

“Oh, I’m so sorry. I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going. Are you alright?” asked Cheryl.

“Oh, I think so, but I couldn’t see you until it was too late.”

“But you’re wearing glasses.”

“They don’t help that much. I’m legally blind.”

“Oh. Well, I’m even more sorry that I wasn’t looking.”

“Why weren’t you paying attention to where you were going?”

“Oh, I was just thinking about the roses that I can’t find for my garden. I’ve been looking a long time, but I haven’t found the ones my garden needs at the store.”

“You have a garden without roses? Is it a very big garden?”

“Yes, it’s quite big, but it’s beautiful.” She paused as she thought had for a moment. “You seem familiar to me. Haven’t we met before?”

“Well, that’s possible. I do walk around here quite often. I’m Jack, and you are?”

“Cheryl.”

“Nice to meet you, Cheryl. Would it be possible for me to see your garden someday?”

“Sure. I’m usually there tending it.”

*****

Later that same day, Cheryl was busying tending her garden once again. She was so absorbed that she didn’t notice when Jack came strolling down the garden path. He didn’t say anything for awhile as he watched her tend to her flowers. Finally, she stood up and turned around.

“Oh, my goodness! I didn’t know you were there. How long have you been standing there?”

“Oh, not long at all.” He paused to make sure she was alright. “I decided since I didn’t have anything to do today, that I would come by to see your beautiful garden.”

“Oh, okay. So what do you think of it?”

“It’s large and very beautiful, just like the gardener herself.”

Smiling she said, “Thank you. I’m glad you like it. Would you like something to drink? I was just about to get a lemonade for myself.”

“Sure, lemonade sounds good to me.”

Cheryl then turned to the house and went inside. Jack watched her and when she wasn’t looking, he pulled out his wand. He held it up and pointed in the garden where no flowers grew. He waved it a couple of times as he silently said a few words. Then he put the wand back inside his coat out of sight. By that time, Cheryl had returned with a couple of glasses of lemonade.

“We can drink our lemonade over here at the table.”

Jack followed her and sat down opposite of her.

While they chatted about what wasn’t so important, roses began to bloom in the garden where no flowers had ever grown before. Jack knew it was happening even though he couldn’t see them well. Cheryl was too busy drinking lemonade and talking with her guest to notice the newcomers.

Just before sunset, Jack told Cheryl he had to go home. She thanked him for a pleasant afternoon and then he walked out the way he came in. After he was gone some minutes, she looked over her garden and gasped when she saw the roses.

“Those are the exact roses I have been looking for a very long time! I wonder how they got here.” Baffled, she picked up the empty glasses and took them inside the house.

*****

At home, Jack was busy dictating to his quill about his daily adventures. He was thankful he didn’t have to write with the quill and that it wrote whatever he said. It was good to be a wizard, he thought. The only problem with the dictating quill was the cats. His two cats, Lilly and Spitter liked to swat at the quill when it was moving. So, Jack added a spell that would allow the quill to defend itself. That spell only made matters worse as the quill would swat back and the cats loved it even more. It was truly amazing how much writing Jack was able to do everyday.

He hoped Cheryl liked her present of roses in her garden. He knew he would have to tell her, a muggle, the truth sooner or later. He wasn’t sure what he would say to her, but he knew he would have to tell her. In the meantime, he thought it wouldn’t be a problem to keep visiting her in her garden and making sure all her flowers were healthy. So, that’s what he kept doing.

*****

Months passed by and Cheryl and Jack became the best of friends. The garden prospered under their friendship. All the flowers were healthy and beautiful. They seemed to never fade. Then one day as Jack was casting another spell on the garden, thinking he wasn’t seen as usual, but Cheryl has stepped back outside sooner than he had expected.

“Hey, Jack, what kind of sandwich did you want?” She walked over to him and saw him pointing his wand directly at the garden. Her eyes widen and she said, “What are you doing to my garden?”

Jack froze in place. He lowered his wand and then turned to face her. “Well, I thought you’d appreciate it. All the flowers that is.”

Cheryl just stared at him for a long time. “Did you plant those roses?”

“Yes, with my wand.”

“Oh, thank you, but I had no idea you were a wizard.”

“Well, yes, but I knew I would have to tell you sooner or later.” He paused. “You’re not mad, are you?”

“No, actually I’m shocked, but I love how beautiful my garden has been since you’ve been here.”

“I’m glad you like it. You have done a lot of work on it.”

*****

Later that evening, Jack talked to his cats about what had happened with Cheryl that day. They stopped playing with the quill and listened intently.
“Now, I’m afraid once she gets over her shock that she won’t want to see me anymore. What am I to do?”
Both cats wagged their tails and walked over to him and touched his face with a forepaw. Then they jumped down from the table and ran off. Jack heard them go and knew that they would be back before long.

*****

Cheryl was sitting in her garden, staring at the roses. She wasn’t so sure about Jack now that she knew he was a wizard. She had heard too many bad things about them and she hoped he wasn’t like that. As she sat musing, two housecats ran up her garden path. Without any warning they jumped on the table and starting meowing at her.

“What? Where did you come from?”

Both cats wouldn’t stop talking for several minutes. Then they got quiet. Lily jumped off the table and ran over to the roses. Spitter remained and lifted a forepaw to point to her sister.

That was when comprehension dawned on Cheryl. These two cats obviously lived with Jack and they were trying to tell her he gave her the very flowers she wanted because he loved her. “Hey, cats, where is Jack now?”

Both cats came together on the garden path and pointed their forepaws in the direction they needed to go. Cheryl stood up and followed the two all the way to Jack’s place.

Once there, she found him sighing.

“Oh, why did I have to get careless with the flower spells? If I hadn’t, Cheryl would still be happy with me and her garden…” He sighed again.

“Jack, it’s okay. I was just shocked. After what I’ve heard about some wizards, it made me pause. But then I thought about it and you haven’t done anything wrong. You’re not like those bad wizards. You even gave me the roses I’ve been wanting and searching for a long time.”

Jack turned around. “I’m so glad you’re not upset with me.”

“Would you like to come back and visit my garden again?”

“Yes, of course!”

The four of them, Cheryl, Jack, Lily, and Spitter, walked back to the flower garden. There they spent many happy times with a few occasional spell blow-ups.

Sleeping

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

From what I understand is cats sleep longer per day than humans do. There is some variance. Some humans claim they only need to sleep four hours a day. I hope you’re right about that. I know my girl tends to do well on about seven to eight hours a day.

We cats tend to sleep for at least 16 hours a day. Humans just can’t come close unless they are suffering from concussions or post-concussions. I’m not sure it’s good for you humans to get that much sleep unless you really need it for health reasons.

And you know what we cats do while we sleep? We dream. Vividly. Some humans have proven it. We actively dream while we sleep. We don’t always sleep for 16 hours straight. We take naps throughout the day.

What did you expect? We have to eat and use the litter box too. We also need to exercise and get some love from others we love. So, you may think we’re not doing much of anything all day long, but you’re wrong. We’re dreaming our lives away.

You can’t even come close to us in our dreaming lives. You’re just not asleep enough every day to do that.

Camping Out

Tragedy had struck again. To this wonderful second family of mine. I was terribly upset, but I was able to adapt with them. I was able to look after Spot and my girl. I don’t know what happened or why. My girl couldn’t talk about it. Whatever it was, it was hard on her. Perhaps harder on her than on Spot or me.

So, we had to move out of our first home we had shared together. We went to live in someone’s backyard in a tent. My girl slept in the tent at night. Spot and I would sleep with her as well. I don’t think my girl found the situation ideal, but there wasn’t much else she could do at the time.

Things seemed bad for her. Spot and I were safe. We knew where our home was even if it meant we were outside. I had lived outside from my birth, so it wasn’t anything new to me. I just had to give him a few lessons. My girl still had food for us, but being me, I hunted and caught a couple of birds.

The first one was tasty. I left the head and a wing as a gift for my girl. I left it at her feet. She saw it when she woke up the next morning. And what did she do when she realized what the gift was? She screamed. She is a vegetarian. There was no thanks for that gift. *Sigh.* Yes, my beloved girl is a vegetarian.

I guess I should have known. I guess I may have overlooked that fact because she did tend to eat animal products. But she is a vegetarian. I know anymore she tries to eat mainly plants because they make her feel better. But that’s another story.

At least Spot and I didn’t need a litter box at our camp. We could bury our waste outside where the humans wouldn’t know. It was one less thing for my girl to worry about. Sometimes I would stay out all day and then I’d hear my girl calling for me. I could tell she missed me. So, of course I went to her when she called.

But then something odd happened while we were camping. A bird came to dive bomb me! It was an angry bird. It was loud and vocal about who I had eaten. I was in trouble and didn’t know what to do. So, I called for my girl. She came to my rescue.

She explained to me why the bird was upset. Surprisingly, my girl wasn’t upset with me. She understood why I had eaten the birds. I guess I never realized that a bird would be upset about my hunting. I never knew my prey could love as I could. Now I know better. I’m glad my girl saved me. She didn’t have to do much. She just flung her arms around while the bird was flying. Then it would fly up in a tree, but it was still complaining.

My girl could hear how upset the bird was as I could. I never expected anyone to complain about me being a hunter. I just don’t understand it. I’m a cat. I hunt for food. To eat. To survive. Spot even tried to catch a bird, but he got clawed and didn’t try again.

I didn’t try to hunt any more birds either. It just wasn’t safe. What would I do if my girl wasn’t around to protect me from any angry birds? I didn’t know. Getting pecked isn’t fun at all. But we didn’t camp out forever. I had no idea how soon it would be before we would have another apartment again.

The three of us moved again into a temporary house. Our stuff was hidden for safety. So, we waited. We spent that night not in the tent, but in a bathroom. All three of us. Spot and I were fine sleeping on the floor. My girl seemed to be okay. I don’t know how big she rates as a human. But she had to curl around to fit on the floor. Spot and I cuddled up to her without any trouble.

The next day, my girl left for quite a while. Spot and I were alone with strange humans around. There was a mama cat who had some kittens to look after too. I don’t know what my girl was doing. Perhaps she was making arrangements for our new home. She didn’t tell me.

Well, the mama cat and I got into a fight. It wasn’t pretty. I didn’t care she was a girl. We had a territorial dispute. I thought since my girl slept there last night that it was our place and this mama cat was encroaching on our turf. So, the other humans separated the mama cat and me. Spot was still with me and not causing any trouble.

One of the humans came to take a shower in the bathroom and had no idea he was there. He ended up soaking wet, but never complained. He didn’t learn that from me. I knew to stay out of the bathroom when someone wanted to take a shower. It’s just common sense for a cat. But he had been bottle fed and half raised by a human…

When my girl found out that I had a fight with the mama cat, she scolded me and told me I should have let her win. Something about the mama cat was just defending her kittens. Where did I go wrong? My girl wasn’t mean about it, but I was shocked she was telling me these things.

Fortunately, for us we weren’t staying there again for another night. So, the kittens weren’t separated from their mama for very long.

And to think I got chewed out for fighting a mama cat? What was my girl thinking? She isn’t my mother.

Vaccine in Other Languages

graphic from Ali Noel Vyain

This month’s cat vocabulary is the word vaccine. I don’t know of anyone who likes to get shots for anything, but sometimes we do need them. As long as we don’t have any adverse reactions to the vaccine, they should help us stay healthy and prevent serious health problems from occurring.

For cats, that means a rabies vaccine and perhaps a few others. It is a good idea to make sure they have their vaccine so they don’t go crazy and bite random humans for no real reason.

I’m just happy that when they get their shots, it doesn’t take very long and they do get over it fairly quickly. It seems to help when whoever gave them the shot distracts them with some playful way.

Cat Quotes 2:03

graphic by Ali Noel Vyain

Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a purpose. —Garrison Keillor

Cats don’t have a purpose? What about putting us in our place? What about teaching us we aren’t the only intelligent species on this planet? What about teaching us how to treat them with respect to earn their respect in return?

A meow massages the heart. —Stuart McMillan

Yes, it does. It’s wonderful to hear a pleasant meow. A greeting or Nuri’s happy sound. The sound she makes when she is happy to see me and will let me pick her up and cuddle her as she purrs.
